It is very interesting when we look at the evolution of the IOLs. Initially, we had single-vision IOLs also called as monofocals which could only correct the distance vision or only one focus. All these lenses were predominantly created to get rid of the distance vision and for near vision, one would need glasses. Then came the multifocal lenses which were designed to overcome near vision and distance vision, in other words, these were acting like bifocals.

These lenses are true presbyopia-correcting IOLs, the reason being crisp near and intermediate vision which mimics the natural crystalline lens. Near vision is at 40 cm and intermediate at 60 cm which is comfortable for computer work.
Even though this is a new advance, there are cases where a trifocal lens might not be the answer. For those with underlying eye problems like people with retinal or corneal issues, people who depend on night vision and amateur and professional pilots, trifocals may not be the best answer.
