All across India National Doctors’ Day is celebrated on July 1 in memory of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, a legendary physician and the second Chief Minister of West Bengal. He was born on July 1, 1882 and died on the same date in 1962.

In his memory, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) had instituted B.C. Roy National Award to recognize eminent people who contribute to medicine, science, philosophy, public affairs, arts, and literature. The President of India presents the award every year on July 1, National Doctor’s Day.

Dr Roy was a physician and the second chief minister of West Bengal. He was also an educationist, social worker and freedom fighter. He was awarded Bharat Ratna in 1961.
