Risks for Cataract

A cataract is a very common problem that affects the elderly. It is interesting that while cataract is considered an age-related problem, there are various factors that can increase the risk of cataract.
The risk for cataracts increases with injuries and harmful habits also increase the risk of cataract formation.

The common factors that can increase the risk of cataracts include:
• Age – after the age of 60 years, the risk increases manifold.
• Trauma and eye injuries – Severe injuries that penetrate your lens capsule cause swelling, whitening, or thickening of lens fibers. Penetrating trauma can injure the lens capsule and can lead to cataracts. Even blunt injuries can lead to cataracts and need surgery.
• Diabetes – diabetics have an increased risk of cataracts
• Consumption of medications like corticosteroids for a long time – this increases the risk of cataracts and glaucoma
• Smoking and alcohol consumption
• Exposure to X-ray and UV radiations including excessive sunlight

The common features or symptoms of cataracts include blurred vision, haloes around lights, poor night vision, and poor visibility of distant objects. Other features include double vision and frequent changes in lens power.
Treatment for cataracts is by the modern technique of phacoemulsification in which we use a minute incision to remove the cataract and intraocular lens implantation. Recovery is very fast and the success of cataract surgery is very high.
