Effect of Blue Light on the Eyes

Effect of Blue Light on the Eyes

THE discomfort related to blue light is becoming more prevalent. The various problems which can occur due to this blue light passing through the cornea and lens and hitting the retina include diseases like dry eye, cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, enhancing adrenocortical hormone, and even affecting the quality of sleep.

Specific effects:
a) Cornea: Blue light incites inflammation of the human corneal epithelial cells by increasing the number of reactive oxygen species. This leads to oxidative damage and apoptosis.

b) Lens: When the blue light hits the lens, the absorption of the blue light occurs in the lens. While this is protective and prevents retinal damage, the lens gets affected by the reactive oxygen species and develops opacification and reduction of the transparency, and develops cataracts eventually.

c) Retina: Blue light can penetrate through the lens and fall on the retina causing photochemical damage.

d) Circadian rhythm: Excess blue light at night can increase melatonin levels and this can stimulate the brain, inhibit the melatonin secretion and increase corticosteroid production and which affects the quality of sleep.

e) Dry eyes: Lack of sleep can lead to reduced eye closing time and this can increase tear evaporation and lead to dry eyes.
