The coronavirus is a highly contagious virus that can cause acute respiratory distress syndrome called COVID-19. Some reports suggest that the virus can cause conjunctivitis and can be transmitted by aerosol contact with the conjunctiva. Patients who report to the ophthalmologist with conjunctivitis and who have associated fever and shortness of breath or who have traveled internationally to countries where there is an outbreak of this disease or have come in contact with people who may have recently traveled to these areas may represent cases of COVID -19.
Conjunctivitis is a very uncommon event to be associated with COVID-19, but transmission may occur through aerosol contact with the conjunctiva. Hence one does not need to fear when one develops conjunctivitis unless there are other symptoms like cough and shortness of breath. The virus primarily spreads through respiratory droplets from one person to another person when an infected person sneezes or coughs. It may also occur when a person touches a surface infected with a virus and then touches their mouth, nose, or eyes.
A protective cover for the nose, mouth, and eyes is recommended to prevent the spread of the virus. More importantly, adequate disinfection with alcohol and bleach-based disinfectants is also recommended. Social distancing is recommended and quarantine for those affected by the virus.
Preventing spread:
Wash hands frequently (with soap and water or alcoholic solutions).
Avoid close contact with people who show signs of respiratory condition, such as coughing or sneezing.
Keep a distance of approximately one meter from people with symptoms of acute respiratory infection.
Cover your mouth and nose with tissues or cough or sneeze and wash your hands afterward. A protective cover for the nose, mouth, and eyes is recommended to prevent the spread of the virus
Seek medical attention if you have a fever, cough, or shortness of breath.
