Conditions Linked to Sun Damage

In this blog, we discuss the various ways in which sun rays can cause damage to the eyes.

Aging

About 80% of the aging process occurs due to the harmful sun rays. Ultraviolet rays from the sunlight can cause damage to the skin, and lead to wrinkles, sun spots, and loose skin.

Repeated squinting due to the sun can lead to crow’s feet and wrinkles around the eyes and forehead. Protective sunglasses which can block the ultraviolet light should be used and those which offer protection of UV 400 or higher must be used as these can block nearly 99 %  of the ultraviolet rays. Apart from the wrinkles which can be considered cosmetic, ultraviolet light can also lead to cancer. Hence appropriate eyeglasses offering protection from harmful ultraviolet rays should be worn.

Corneal burn

Most corneal burns occur due to welding, but snow blindness can occur due to the ultraviolet light from the sun. Protective eyewear should be worn to prevent this.

Pinguecula and pterygia

Ultraviolet exposure to the conjunctiva can lead to overgrowth of tissue and transformation of the nature of the tissue. Pterygia can grow over the cornea and threaten the vision. Pinguecula does not grow over the cornea.

Cataracts

Cataracts are known to progress due to sunlight damage. The transparent lens matter undergoes changes and opacification of the lens occurs.

Macular degeneration

Age-related macular damage occurs due to the ultraviolet light and this can lead to loss of central vision. There can be a dry form and a wet form.

The only way out is prevention of these problems by using appropriate protective measures.
