COMMON TESTS DONE BEFORE CATARACT SURGERY

Cataract is a condition in which a person develops blurred vision as the lens in the eye becomes opaque. If one has poor vision, blurring, difficulty to read distant boards, double vision in one eye, faded colours, and poor contrast one needs to consider undergoing cataract surgery.

Tests done are:

  1. The doctor examines the eye lids and the adjacent areas to look for any source of infection.
  1. The cornea or transparent part of the eye is also examined for any white opacities as this lies in front of the cataract.
  1. One also looks for dry eyes.
  1. Microscope examination of the eye is done – this gives a good view of the extent and hardness of the cataract and helps in planning the surgery.
  1. Biometry test is done to determine the type and power of lens. The lens can be monofocal, multifocal or toric lens. This can be done by ultrasound and optical methods both of which can be done.
  1. Special tests include – corneal topography, optical coherence tomography, and specular microscopy which are done only in special situations.
